So many of the scenes from Old Cairo are virtually unchanged now. For real-life time travel I heartily recommend a tea and a shisha pipe in Fishawi’s cafe.

I’m reading “The Cairo Trilogy” by Naghib Mahfouz at the moment. It’s a beautiful and moving set of novels about a Muslim family in Cairo, spanning the 1920s to the 1940s. The books also touch on the changing social and political situation in Egypt during these years.
It’s wonderful to see the Egypt that I’ve read about in these books brought to life in the photos above.
Yes, not much changed - except plastic garbage littering the place and motor traffic swarming everywhere now, kicking up dust and filling the air with noxious pollution.

Amazing stuff. Mother went to Cairo several years ago and I showed them to her. Said the feeling and look was exactly the same.

I also visited Egypt about 6 years ago and I walked down sreets/alleys similar to those - things are pretty much still the same.
The majority of India looks much the same today, and that’s nearly 90 years later.

Interesting to see how much less development there was then, and how much less garbage - but then the population has doubled several times since then.
