Aged Barbie

“But at my back I always hear
Time’s winged chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found,
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song; then worms shall try
That long preserv’d virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust.
The grave’s a fine and private place,
But none I think do there embrace.”

- from “To His Coy Mistress”
Andrew Marvell (c. 1650-1660)

    That Marvell poem is so disgusting, I always hated it. Marvell is basically threatening a very young women with the idea that if she doesn’t give in and sleep with him, then worms will do the honour when she is dead. Marvell is a sleaze- perhaps a man of his time, but I think that is to degrade other men of his time! Poor old Barbie.

    How old is Barbie anyway?

    Barbie, my dear Karina, is 51

    I’ve always loved “To His Coy Mistress” - the lecherous logic is so funny! Marvell’s not threatening anyone with anything - don’t confuse the first person of the poem with the poet…
