“Almost everyone has heard about the Crossing the Line ceremony that takes place on ships that cross the Equator. I didn’t realise there was a similar marking of the crossing of the Arctic Circle which my Grandad, George Sullivan, did as a seaman aboard the Amphion class submarine HMS Alcide in 1952.
George served for many years in both the Royal Navy and Merchant Marine from some time during World War II into the Fifties. He didn’t talk much about his wartime service. In fact he didn’t talk much at all. These snapshots and a few others like them show a very different man to the one I knew as a child and are a wonderful glimpse into what looked like an exciting and dangerous life.”
