If jufjo will pardon me jumping in here, his images are at http://www.flickr.com/groups/amsterdamthenandnow/pool/ and are equally stunning as these. It’s the background commentary that really makes them come to life. That and I know Amsterdam quite well, so they have some resonance with me.
Just one question – how do you explain some of the “ghosts” in the earlier photos which look as though they’re immersed up to their knees, or their waists, in the pavement? Surely the level of the road surface hasn’t been built up *that* much?

These are superlative!
Amazing, I’ve done the same with Amsterdam during WW2, but only a few pictures.
What a lot of work!
Very well done, thanks for sharing.
Could you please share a link to the flickr collection so I can add my compliments there as well?
Sure. Sergey has not put these images on flickr, though he has put three similarly beautiful images there…
Your Amsterdam images sound very interesting, Jufjo. Are they online?
These are stunning – the history right there on the streets.

Thanks very much Martin. Jo’s pictures are indeed stunning.
Thank you – these are excellent.
Very very cool project. Love the juxtaposition of current/past photos.
I did a similar project recently myself, though with a different execution- photos my Great-grandfather/grandfather took. A Century Later
That is so well done! Should be done with more villages and cities…
I wish I knew more of the stories! What’s with the herd of tiny children? Are they orphans? Are they at school? Are they being evacuated or reunited?
