Almost 2,000 Soyuz have been blasted into space over the past 50 years, with very few failures. IgotBupkis, would you remind me again how American astronauts propose getting into space these days? Analog got us to the moon and back!</i> This is a different kind of "analog"... This is the "tap it with your finger to make sure it's not stuck" kind of analog. I recall seeing how the Soyuz compared to the Apollo, back when there was the joint A-S mission in the 70s. The NYT, I think it was, had a visual comparison of the two instrument panels. It was like a comparison of the Spirit of St. Louis panel with that of a 747. The Soyuz astronauts took location measurements using star sightings out of the window. The Apollo used a specially designed periscope that took *accurate* star measurements. What was amazing about the Soviet space program was not that they got men into space, it's that they got ANY of them back alive. It says more than enough that the Soviet shuttle never really got "off the ground", considering the endless headaches that NASA had with the task, and they were vastly more technically competent. The Russians have always been world class at the pure sciences -- math, physics, chemistry and the like... but their overall engineering talents, in The Real World, have generally been remarkably laughable.
