No wonder great granddad was annoyed!
To hell or to Connaught is what they would say. Thanks England, pricks.
Very interesting. Fascinating to see the ‘Act’ laid out in map-form. As a Dubliner and Leinsterman I can’t believe that the Leinster Irish would be sent west to lands without a coast!
The infamous maxim coined by Oliver Cromwell ‘To hell or to Connacht ‘ is really made flesh here!
Strange to see how the Native Irish were essentially threated in a way not to different from what native populations in the Americas would later endure, basically a reservation system. The only bonus being racialy after a few generations neither can tell who’s who!? Unless its time for church on Sunday!
Eric,
Very good remark indeed, it was the first time that Malthus could use his theories and practise them politicaly, in the States it was to be used again on the same basis…

Except by your name, where you go to school, the neighbourhood you live in….
az,
That is all very true in the case of N.Ireland and is a very fair point indeed, but the point i was making was simply that in terms of basic physical identification its much easier to tell who is who when people are racialy different. For example a Catholic friend of mine from Waterford who’s girlfriend from Kilkenny is Church of Ireland were seeing each other for months before they even realised and thankfully it didnt matter to either.
