Ted Landsmark says that Rakes was swinging the flag at him, not trying to spear him as it appears in the photo. I don't know what you saw there, but Ladndsmark testimony denied yours. I was there that day. The photo captures a white Bostonian attacking a black Bostonian with an American flag. It was an act of outrageous racism, so bald that the photographer was awarded a Pulitzer prize for it. After doing some poking around the interwebs I found that the telephone lineman in the 1968 photo recovered, the young girl from the Sanatoga Rd Tragedy lived, and the toddler in the fire escape collapse survived; (her fall was broken by the woman falling with her, who died). Sadly, little Baylee from the OK City bombing died from her injuries. Two year old Patricia died 6 days after her rescue (1989 photo by Olshwanger).
