I would love to have any of these fine outfits! We missed this wing of the V&A when we were there. Which means we have to go back to London, darn! The Costume Museum in Bath is fascinating as well. I am sure there were Victorian "Valley Girls" claiming that muslin was so "last season" but the untrained eye can't really see those subtleties now. I mean, as a product of the late 1970s I used to think that every decade of the 20th century was very distinct - but now the fashions seem to divide into a pre and post WW2 atmosphere. A 1950s guy in jeans and a t-shirt wouldn't look that out of place in 1999 to an outsider. Makes me think that a fashion paradigm shift is overdue! The collection was donated in 1913 and at THAT time they were already considered old. They look like they date from the mid-1700's (starting at the top) until the 1870's or 80's.
