It makes me mad when people go "OMG an iPad before the 21st century!" when, actually, the word you're looking for is "tablet" and the idea is neither terribly new, nor invented by Apple. I suppose it's a testament to Apple's marketing that people think the iPad was actually a miraculous and amazing invention, when in fact the concept is remarkably simple and *not new*. @sweet greggo, @Chaille:

They had touchscreens, played videos and everything else. Not taking away from the iPad's popularity, but the entire history of a category of computing shouldn't be dismissed because of one product. I saw '2001' when it came out in theatres in 1968 -- I was about 12 -- and the future it showed us was centuries away then, not decades. (Or so we assumed.) Computers were huge things owned by corporations or the military. Television had only just started going colour. The idea that you'd own a tiny 'personal' computer that would show you TV pictures -- let alone billions of pages of human knowledge -- and all for pretty much free... absurd. Buck Rogers stuff. But here I am viewing this site on my iPad and taking it all for granted. O brave new world, etc. I just watched this clip on my iPad, which makes it all, well, cyclical I guess you’d say.
