The eternal smile of David Leung...

Even with the slight hint of a sailor suit, it is almost impossible to believe that the photograph above was taken in 1911. But so it was. It is one of the timeless images of F. Holland Day.


Fred Holland Day lost interest in photography when the platinum used in the photographic process he favoured became unavailable after the Russian Revolution.

Addendum:
David Leung was born in San Francisco in 1893, and was 18 when the picture at the top of this post was taken. He was Mongolian by nationality. In the 1920 census, he was listed as living in Boston, and working as a restaurant manager.

    I was so happy to see David Leung’s face again this morning. What a marvelous glimpse into the past. It is especially touching to me to see these wonderful faces so naturally presented and not the stiff, formal, self-aware portraits that one usually sees from that era. Thank you for these; they are truly special.
